How To Learn Organic Chemistry Easily?

Organic Chemistry is a sub-branch of Chemistry, that involves learning of structure, characteristics, reactions, composition, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds. Carbon-containing compounds include hydrocarbons compounds (carbon and hydrogen) and also compounds like halogens, phosphorus, nitrogen, silicon, oxygen, and sulfur.

Originally, organic chemistry was limited to the study of compounds generated by living organisms. Recently, it has advanced until the study of man-made items like plastics. Organic Chemistry is applied widely across petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, paints, explosives, and cosmetics and various other industries.

Carbon is a compound that is widely available in the universe. Even on earth, carbon is the main constituent of living organisms. Carbon compounds are also seen in inorganic compounds like diamond, plastic, methane, dyes and more. Carbon features four electrons that have the capacity to combine with 4 different compounds. When the carbon bond is shared with hydrogen, a hydrocarbon bond is formed. When carbon forms bond with any metal, a carbon-metal bond is formed. Study of the carbon-metal bond is known as organometallic chemistry.

Organic compounds exist in mixture form and are composed of one or more components. To check the purity of the organic compounds, chromatography techniques like HPLC and gas chromatography are used. To separate the compounds from one another, methods like solvent extraction, distillation, and crystallization are used.

Learn Organic Chemistry Easily And Comfortably

Here are some tips that help you to study and remember the concepts in an easy way:

  • Acid-Base Reactions: this is an important section in organic chemistry that helps you to deal with organic compounds.
  • Know the structure of the compound: know how many bonds exist between the chemical compound by studying the structure in detail. Learn the types of Chemical bonding present in various compounds.
  • Solve problems: Practice more problems from basic to higher levels. Practice the problems given in NCERT questions and solutions. Solve the problems given in previous year question papers and sample paper.
  • Concept-based study: Study the chapter and understand the concepts rather than memorizing it. The concept-based study helps you to solve the application-level problems.
  • Best Short-cut: Prepare mind-maps and notes for easy understanding of all concept so that you’ll remember it much easier.

Make sure you thoroughly study the concept of organic chemistry before you appear for the exam. Know the stepwise approach to solve the problems. Clarify your doubt with your teaching faculty or friends. And do check out chemistry videos for better visualization of various topics on BYJU’S YouTube channel:
